learning the fretboard

Sorry, but it's just memory and practice.

There are a quite a few ways to memorize it but this one is pretty easy and gradual. Spend a few minutes every day, pick a natural note (not sharp or flat) and find it on the fretboard on each of the strings. Start with only those up to the 12th fret. After a few weeks as that gets easier do it to a metronome (say 60 bpm) and slowly increase the tempo. Again after a few weeks start adding in the sharped and flatted notes. Working around the circle of fifths or circle of fourths (backwards on the same circle) is a good way to do this. You may have to ease back on the metronome tempo for a bit or maybe even go back to free time.

There somebody on Youtube somewhere that has a really good system for this. Unfortunately here at work I can't get to Youtube to find it. I think I picked up on this from another thread in this forum. I was fairly impressued with the system. It was some sort of pattern that makes it easier than just rote memorization.

Perhaps a serch within this forum or on Youtube itself and you can find it. or if anyone else remembers thia and can post the link...

There are a lot of systems hanging around for this- I like Hyperborea's.

I also made fretboard flashcards I could use when I didn't have the guitar with me. A more tech-y version of the same thing is a free program called "fretboard warrior," which you can google and download.

But it all comes down to the same thing. Practice and memory.

I just bought the Fretboard Workbook recently, and I really like it. There are a lot of good exercises in it to help you learn the layout, and for the most part you don't really even need your guitar in front of you, which is kind of nice sometimes.

Anyone wanting to use flash cards can get a layout that I created for myself. You can find the original thread here.

It prints on to standard 85mm x 54mm business cards, such as the Avery 32016 or 32010.

You have to fill the cards in yourself, which is another help in learning the fretboard.

That system kills, now I cant wait to get off work and play around with it.

The way I learnt is just by increasing the difficulty of the songs I play. So yes its just practice. You've got to push yourself to really start learning otherwise you'll end up stuck at a certain level.
